This is the day plan we actually give our own visiting friends. Aruba's south coast holds two of the island's best experiences ten minutes apart: the Caribbean's boldest street-art town and its calmest turquoise lagoon. Do them in the right order, murals in the cool morning light, beach through the hot afternoon, and you get the island's most complete day for the price of one tank of gas.
The plan at a glance
- 8:00 — Drive south. 25 minutes from Oranjestad, 35–40 from the Palm Beach strip.
- 8:30 — Park free at the Saint Theresa church lot at the entrance of San Nicolas, right in front of the giant Welcome to Sunrise City letters.
- 8:35 — Walk the mural district while the streets are cool and the light is golden. This is when the town is at its best: bakeries open, walls glowing, no midday heat.
- 10:15 — Coffee or a pastechi in town, then browse the main-street art galleries as they open.
- 11:00 — Ten-minute drive to Baby Beach. Claim a palapa before the midday arrivals.
- 12:30 — Lunch: the island's best roti at Kamini's Kitchen on the road between town and beach (closed Tuesdays), or fresh fish by the water.
- 13:30 — Swim, snorkel the inside edge of the reef, nap in the shade. The lagoon stays waist-deep and pool-calm.
- 16:30 — Optional: two minutes to sleepy Rodgers Beach, or the wild limestone coast at Seroe Colorado.
- 17:30 — Back through town for coconut shrimp at Charlie's Bar (closed Sundays), then the sunset drive home along the sea.
Why morning in town, afternoon at the beach
Most visitors do it backwards, beach first, town as an afterthought at 2 PM when the streets are baking and half of San Nicolas is closed for lunch. Flip it. San Nicolas mornings are shaded, breezy and alive; Baby Beach afternoons are exactly what a hot afternoon is for. And the murals photograph best before ten, when the low sun hits the painted walls straight on.

- San Nicolas: free lot at the Saint Theresa church, directly across from the Welcome to Sunrise City sign at the entrance of town. Everything painted is a short flat walk from there.
- Baby Beach: free parking on the sand lot behind the lagoon. Weekday mornings it's near-empty; weekends fill by noon.
- No car? The Arubus L1 runs from Oranjestad to San Nicolas about every half hour, then it's a short ride south to the beach. Full details in our getting-there guide.
What to bring
- Comfortable shoes for the morning, the mural walk is flat but the sidewalks are honest.
- Swimsuit under your clothes, so town-to-beach is a two-minute change.
- Reef-safe sunscreen and a hat, Baby Beach shade is limited at midday.
- Headphones and a charged phone if you're playing the quest.
- Cash for pastechi and roti, some of the best food on this coast is counter-service.
If you only have half a day
Cruise-ship stop or a packed schedule? Do the morning block only: park at the church at 9, walk or play until 11, one cold drink on the main street, back in Oranjestad by noon. The beach deserves its own trip, the murals don't need one.
