This is the day plan we give our own visiting friends. Aruba's south coast holds two of the island's best experiences ten minutes apart: the Caribbean's boldest street-art town and its calmest turquoise lagoon. Do them in the right order, murals in the cool morning, beach through the hot afternoon, and you get the island's most complete day for the price of a tank of gas. The plan at a glance
- 8:00 Leave the hotel strip. Start the narrated drive in. The tour tells the story of Spanish Lagoon, Mangel Halto and Savaneta as they pass, and explains the refinery when it comes into view. 25 minutes from Oranjestad, 35 to 45 from Palm Beach.
- 8:40 Park free at the Saint Theresa church lot at the entrance of San Nicolas, right in front of the giant Welcome to Sunrise City letters.
- 8:45 Walk the mural walk, 9 essential stops plus 5 extras while the streets are cool and the light is golden. Bakeries open, walls glowing, no midday heat. 60 to 90 minutes at your own pace.
- 10:30 Coffee or a pastechi in town, then browse the main-street galleries as they open.
- 11:00 Start the narrated drive out: the refinery gate, the red anchor at Seroe Colorado, the lighthouse and natural bridge, then Rodgers Beach. Half an hour with the stops.
- 11:45 Arrive at Baby Beach. The tour ends with a short stop on the current at the lagoon mouth. Claim an umbrella before the midday arrivals.
- 12:30 Lunch: the island's best roti at Kamini's Kitchen on the road between town and beach (closed Tuesdays), or a plate at Big Mama Grill on the sand.
- 13:30 Swim, snorkel the inside edge of the reef, nap in the shade. The lagoon stays waist-deep and pool-calm.
- 16:30 Optional: two minutes to sleepy Rodgers Beach if you skipped it, or back up to the cliffs at Seroe Colorado for the wind.
- 17:30 Back through town for coconut shrimp at Charlie's Bar (closed Sundays), then the sunset drive home along the sea.

Why morning in town, afternoon at the beach
Most visitors do it backwards. Beach first, then town as an afterthought at 2 PM, when the streets are baking and half of San Nicolas is closed for lunch. Flip it. San Nicolas mornings are shaded, breezy and alive. Baby Beach afternoons are exactly what a hot afternoon is for. And the murals photograph best before ten, when the low sun hits the painted walls straight on.
The three legs of the day
Leg 1: the narrated drive in
The tour starts as you leave the hotel strip and uses your phone's GPS to play each story at the right place. Spanish Lagoon, Aruba's only lagoon, comes first. Then Mangel Halto and its mangroves, then Savaneta, the island's first capital. When the refinery stacks appear on the horizon, the narrator explains why a small fishing coast became one of the largest refineries in the world. Leg 2: the mural walk, 9 essential stops plus 5 extras
On foot, from the welcome sign, the walk takes you wall to wall through the street-art district. Nine essential stops and five extras, each one a mural or a corner with a story, at whatever pace you like. Stop for a coffee, stop for a photo, pick it up again. It is flat, about 1.2 km, and finishes close to where you parked. Our free walking map shows the loop if you want to preview it.
Leg 3: the narrated drive out
Back in the car, the tour guides you out of town past the old refinery gate and into Seroe Colorado. It stops you at the red anchor, takes you up to the lighthouse and the natural bridge below the cliffs, then down to Rodgers Beach. It ends at Baby Beach with one short, important piece on where the current runs and where not to swim. Then it goes quiet and you go swimming. The Seroe Colorado guide covers this leg in detail.
Parking, both ends
- San Nicolas: free lot at the Saint Theresa church, directly across from the Welcome to Sunrise City sign at the entrance of town. Everything painted is a short flat walk from there.
- Baby Beach: free parking on the sand lot behind the lagoon. Weekday mornings it is near-empty. Weekends fill by noon. Bathrooms are paid, so bring cash. See the parking and safety guide.
- No car? The Arubus L1 runs from Oranjestad to San Nicolas, and the L900 continues to Baby Beach. The buses drive the same roads, so the road stories play on the bus too. Full details in how to get to Baby Beach.
What to bring
- Comfortable shoes for the morning. The mural walk is flat but the sidewalks are honest.
- Swimsuit under your clothes, so town-to-beach is a two-minute change.
- Water shoes for the lagoon. The seabed is rocky in places.
- Reef-safe sunscreen and a hat. Baby Beach shade is limited at midday.
- A charged phone, loaded on hotel Wi-Fi so the tour plays offline. One phone can play for the whole car, or up to four can each run it.
- Cash for pastechi, roti and the beach bathrooms. Some of the best food on this coast is counter-service.
If you only have half a day
Cruise-ship stop or a packed schedule? Do the morning block only: bus or taxi to the welcome sign by 9, walk the essentials until 11, one cold drink on the main street, back in Oranjestad by noon. The beach deserves its own trip. The murals do not need one. The cruise-day plan has the exact timings.
