How to Get to San Nicolas, Aruba (Without Overpaying)

San Nicolas sits on Aruba's southern tip, about 19 km from Oranjestad and a world away from the high-rise strip. Getting there is easier than most visitors think, and cheaper too. Here are your three options, honestly compared.

Option 1: Rental car (the flexible one)

The drive is simple: one main road, Route 1A, follows the coast the whole way south. From Oranjestad it takes about 25 minutes; from Palm Beach or Eagle Beach count 35 to 40. Parking in San Nicolas is free and easy, especially in the morning.

• Where to park: the Saint Theresa church lot on Bernhardstraat, right in front of the gas station, is free and you can see the giant Welcome to Sunrise City letters from your car. That sign is exactly where the quest begins
• Best if you want to combine the town with Baby Beach, which is 10 minutes further
• Morning tip: leave the hotel by 8:30 and you arrive with the streets still cool and golden
• You cannot really get lost. One road, follow the sea

Option 2: The public bus (the budget one)

Arubus runs the L1 line from Oranjestad's central bus terminal straight to San Nicolas, roughly every half hour on weekdays. It costs a few dollars each way, the buses are air-conditioned, and the ride takes about 40 minutes with stops. Check arubus.com for the current schedule and fares.

• From Palm Beach, take any bus into Oranjestad first, then switch to the L1
• Sit on the right side going south: sea views most of the way
• Ask the driver for the San Nicolas main street stop, you will step off two minutes from the murals

Option 3: Taxi (the zero-thinking one)

Aruba's taxis run on government-fixed flat rates by zone, not meters. From the Palm Beach hotels expect the San Nicolas trip to cost roughly $45 to $55 one way, from Oranjestad noticeably less. Confirm the flat rate with your driver before setting off, every driver carries the official rate card.

• Good for groups of 3 or 4 splitting the fare
• Arrange your return pickup in advance, taxis do not cruise San Nicolas looking for fares
• Many drivers will happily give you two hours in town and wait, agree the price first

When to go (this matters more than how)

They call it Sunrise City for a reason. Come in the morning: cooler streets, the murals in their best light, and the bakeries open. Note that many spots rest on Sundays, so a weekday or Saturday visit gives you the full town.
